In a battle for second place, the Douglas College Royals women’s basketball team leaned a lot on star forward Rachel Beauchamp.
The fourth-year player helped the Royals earn a split with the Vancouver Island Mariners, winning Friday 57-50, before falling Saturday 66-65.
The two teams are in a battle for second place in PacWest league standings, with VIU two wins ahead at 10-6. But 8-4 Douglas holds two games in hand.
In both games, Beauchamp tallied a double-double, contributing 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Friday win. Teammate Sarah Jorgenson led all shooters with 19 points. On Saturday, Beauchamp corralled 21 points and 10 boards, as the Royals valiantly attempted to shake off a patchy second quarter and out-scored the Mariners 18-12 in the last frame, but to fall one-point short.
Nanaya Miki chipped in 12 points and Simran Bir counted 11 in the loss.
For her effort on the weekend Beauchamp earned the PacWest women’s basketball’s Player of the Week award.
