A trio of New Westminster schools started spring break with warnings about COVID-19 exposures.
A March 15 update on the Fraser Health website reported there new exposures at Ecole Qayqayt Elementary, New Westminster Secondary and Queen Elizabeth Elementary in the week leading up to spring break. The exposure dates for all three schools were on March 8 and 9.
Prior to spring break, which starts today for New Westminster students, COVID-19 exposure notices had gone out to Lord Kelvin Elementary for March 3 and 4 (its first exposure notices of the school year) and Richard McBride Elementary for a March 1 exposure.
While the New Westminster school district has a two-week March break from March 15 to 26, notifications about any exposures that may have occurred leading up to the break will continue to be sent to school communities and will be posted on the Fraser Health website.
Between Feb. 9 and March 10, a total of 19 exposure notifications sent out to six New Westminster schools. That prompted comments from superintendant Karim Hachlaf at last week’s school board meeting.
“Fingers crossed as we head into the break and warmer weather,” he said. “We are optimistic that after the break we can certainly hopefully see decreased numbers with transmission, and we’ll monitor that closely.”
