COVID-19 pandemic: Virus has hit 1 in 25 New Westminster residents

New Westminster saw only five new cases in the last reporting period. But, since the beginning of 2020, more than 2,700 residents have had COVID-19

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2,762 New West residents have had the virus. But the city's high vaccination rates (83% of people 12+ have at least one dose) are helping to bring case counts way down.

More than 2,700 New Westminster residents have had COVID-19 at some point in the past year-and-a-half, according to the latest B.C. Centre for Disease Control data.

The BCCDC's cumulative case map shows New West's count at 2,762 for the period from January 2020 to June 30, 2021.

With the city's population standing at about 71,000, that means approximately one in every 25 residents has come down with COVID-19 so far (or approximately 3,890 cases per 100,000). That puts New West on par with Burnaby and the east side of Vancouver in the category of 3,000 to 4,000 cases per 100,000 – better than Surrey and Delta, with more than 4,000 cases per 100,000, but worse than the Tri-Cities (at 2,000 to 3,000 cases per 100,000) and Richmond (at 1,000 to 2,000 cases per 100,000).

New Westminster's case numbers, however, have been plunging – all the way down to just five in the last reporting period (the week from June 27 to July 3).

And vaccination rates show the city solidly at the front of the pack, with a full 83% of residents aged 12 and up having had their first dose. For Fraser Health municipalities, that puts New West behind only Delta, at 85%.

New West's test positivity rate has also dropped to 1%, from 2% the previous week.
