New Westminster candidates to square off at debates

While the federal leaders crisscross the country to drum up support for their parties for the Oct. 21 federal election, local voters will get a chance to hear from local candidates at several events in the coming weeks.

Voters in New Westminster-Burnaby will get a few chances to hear from the candidates vying for their votes in the Oct. 21 federal election.

While the federal leaders crisscross the country to drum up support for their parties for the Oct. 21 federal election, local voters will get a chance to hear from local candidates at several events in the coming weeks.

Although no candidates had been officially confirmed as candidates in New Westminster-Burnaby with Elections Canada as of the Record’s deadline, at least six people have indicated they’ll be vying to become the riding’s next member of Parliament: Will Davis – Liberal; Suzanne de Montigny – Green; Hansen Ginn – People’s Party; Peter Julian – NDP (incumbent); Neeraj Murarka – Libertarian; andMegan Veck – Conservative.

Voters will get their first chance to hear from the candidates next week, when the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce is holding an all-candidates’ debate. It’s on Wednesday, Sept.  25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Justice Institute, 715 McBride Blvd.

On Oct. 8, the Burnaby Board of Trade is holding a meet and greet for candidates in Burnaby’s three ridings, including New Westminster-Burnaby. It’s on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Firefighters Banquet Hall, 6515 Bonsor Ave.

In an effort to spotlight environmental issues, New Westminster Environmental Partners, Tenth to the Fraser and Babies for Climate Action are hosting a climate change debate. It’s on Wednesday, Oct 2 at 7 p.m. in Massey Theatre’s Plaskett Gallery, 735 Eighth Ave.

The Massey Heights Residents' Association is planning an all-candidates Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 930 Cumberland St. The first hour is a chance for folks to mingle and talk to the candidates, followed by a one-hour roundtable discussion.
