A driver who said he was a YouTube influencer could have some new material to post after being nabbed for excessive speeding in Lantzville on Sunday by the B.C. Highway Patrol.

An officer in an unmarked car made the stop about 6 p.m. after hearing a vehicle accelerate loudly away from a stop light on Highway 19, near Ware Road.

He clocked the Nissan GT-R, a high-performance luxury sports car, at 150 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone.

Excessive-speeding penalties kick in when vehicles are caught travelling at more than 40 km/h over the speed limit.

B.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said the driver expressed surprise that his radar detector didn’t send out an audible warning about the police speed check.

“The driver did not realize that in the hands of a skilled police officer, a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it’s too late,” McLaughlin said.

The driver was given a $368 speeding ticket and had his car impounded for a week.

Police said the driver and his passenger were polite during the interaction, and accepted an offer to be dropped off at a nearby Tim Hortons to wait for a ride from the driver’s mother.
