Port Moody police arrested a suspect after receiving a call early Thursday morning about an intruder in an occupied home in the city's Glenayre neighbourhood.

An unlocked door may have allowed an intruder to break into an occupied Port Moody home early Wednesday (Jan. 29) morning.

Port Moody Police spokesperson, Const. Sam Zacharias, said the lone resident barricaded himself in a room and called police at around 3:45 a.m. after hearing an intruder in his Glenayre neighbourhood home.

Zacharias said as officers were responding, the intruder reportedly started to scream and cause a disturbance.

“It is unclear what the motive of the suspect was or if this home was targeted,” Zacharias said in a news release, adding the intruder likely entered through an unsecured door.

“It is certainly concerning that someone entered an occupied home.”

Zacharias said a 32-year-old man of no fixed arrest was arrested in the home, and police are in the process of recommending charges.

He said the incident is a reminder of the importance of keeping doors and windows secure at all times.
