Following the stabbing of 31-year-old Burnaby RCMP officer Const. Shaelyn Yang, thousands of first responders gathered to salute the hero as her body made its way to Richmond to be laid to rest.
Since her tragic death on Tuesday, Oct. 18, there have been two first responder processions to honour Yang. On Thursday, her body was escorted from Vancouver to Burnaby during the day; in the evening, her body was escorted from Burnaby Hospital to Surrey where her colleagues from other detachments paid their respects.
A final escort occurred on Friday; she was taken to Richmond, where she will be laid to rest.
In a press release, Burnaby RCMP thanked the public for their understanding as processions for the fallen officer continued.
"These processions have allowed partner agencies from across the Lower Mainland to honour Const. Yang and show support for the Burnaby RCMP, while ensuring Const. Yang is accompanied as she makes her way to her final resting place," a Burnaby RCMP spokesperson said in the release.
Books of condolence have been made available for the public to sign at the Burnaby RCMP'Fs main detachment (6355 Deer Lake Ave.) and community police offices.
For those wishing to pay respects and express their sympathies online, condolences can be sent by email to [email protected].
A GoFundMe page has been created to support the family in their time of need; it raised more than $60,000 in the first day.
“As we grieve this tragic loss and focus on supporting our staff and Const. Yang’s family and loved ones, we take strength from the support from our community,” said Burnaby RCMP Officer In Charge, Chief Supt. Graham de la Gorgendiere. “Thank you for helping us honour Const. Yang’s life, service, and contribution to our community.”
