Bosley's Santa will pose for pics with pets

Bosley's Columbia Square in New Westminster is raising funds for the New Westminster Animal Shelter at a holiday pet photo fundraiser this weekend.

"Last year the event raised $1,000 for the shelter and we had approximately 100 dogs and cats come have their picture taken with Santa," said owner Karima Jivraj in an email to The Record. "This year we are hoping to meet or exceed the $1,000 that we raised last year. We are also collecting food and toys for the shelter and Loki's Christmas Wish List."

The fundraiser is taking place on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Bosley's in Columbia Square, which is at Columbia and 10th streets.

Sam Chua Photography will be taking the photos, and Starbucks Columbia Square will be providing coffee and hot chocolates for the pet parents.

The event also features door prizes and giveaways by various pet vendors.

Bosley's was named New Small Business of the Year in the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce's recent 2012 Platinum Awards.

THE FROZEN PAST

Folks who enjoy snow-filled winters and chilly days may want to mark Dec. 19 on their calendars.

That's the day the New Westminster Historical Society will make a presentation at the New Westminster Public Library on the topic: It Was Cold and Snowy and the Fraser was Frozen.

"This program will feature a fascinating collection of winter stories including tales of cold and extreme cold, heavy snowfalls and slippery conditions, and the Fraser River freezing so solid it was impassable to shipping. The stories are all from the early decades of the New Westminster area," according to a press release about the event.

"Learn about this interesting aspect of early Royal City history that is frequently overlooked - winter weather."

The presentation will also include anecdotes from early Christmases in the Royal City, with colourful descriptions of the celebrations. Attendees will get a chance to see winter photos of the city, as well as some snowy scenes from early Christmas cards.

Archie Miller will present this program at the New Westminster Historical Society gathering on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7: 30 p.m. in the library's auditorium at 716 Sixth Ave.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free program and there's no need to pre-register.
