The Queen’s Park Residents Association’s annual general meeting will include a topic close to the hearts of many city residents: traffic.
The residents’ association is holding the AGM on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Centennial Lodge in Queen’s Park. The agenda includes truck traffic tribulations, including an update on the group’s request for a ban of heavy truck traffic on Royal Avenue.
Patrick Livolsi, the regional director for the South Coast region of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, will attend to listen to residents’ concerns and answer questions.
Residents have also expressed concern about the number of recent house break-ins, so a representative of the New Westminster Police Department will attend the meeting.
Six vie for top title
Six young women vying to be Miss New Westminster Ambassador attended the President’s Tea on Feb. 9.
The Hyack Festival Association’s President’s Tea marks the start of the official Miss New Westminster Ambassador competition. The tea was held in the community room of Royal City Centre, where the young women had a chance to meet the judges and make an impression – an impression that will ultimately be worth 15 per cent of their total mark at the end of the competition.
Hyack president Peter Goodwin and first lady Tammy Goodwin hosted the event, where candidates presented a speech they wrote to highlight the attributes of their sponsors.
This year’s candidates and sponsors are: Annabelle Almonte (One Source Printing); Talia Decopite (New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services); Andie Lloyd (New Westminster Rotary Club); Jennifer Slinn (New Westminster Kiwanis Club); Claire Desselhuis (New Westminster Police Officers’ Association); and Ceylin Ozdemire (Save-on-Foods).
“It is a very important first step on their journey to becoming one of New Westminster’s more important icons, Miss New Westminster 2014,” program director Marge Ashdown said in a press release.
Now in its 43rd year, Hyack’s 2014 Miss New Westminster Ambassador program culminates with the crowning of Miss New Westminster on Thursday, April 10 at the Columbia Theatre.
