End-of-summer fun: What's happening in New Westminster in September?

Street festivals and lacrosse championships are just some of the events happening in New West in September

Sept. 1 to 3

The eighth annual AHFOMAD festival, presented by African Heritage Music and Dance Society, features a diverse group of local, national and international talents, artists and vendors, and includes workshops and music masterclasses to immerse emerging artists into the Canadian music business. It’s taking place at Massey Theatre and Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces from Sept. 1 to 3. Info at www.festivalafrica.org.

Sept. 2 to 4

Fraser River Discovery Centre’s final Summer Discovery Days event will focus on Changing Colours with the Seasons. The Labour Day long weekend event is takes place from Saturday, Sept. 2 to Monday, Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 788 Quayside Dr. Pre-registration is not required. Sunday, Sept. 3

The Ta Da Lady performs an all-ages, interactive storytelling performance at the Queen's Park Concert Series on Sunday, Sept. 3 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Queen's Park Bandshell.

Friday, Sept. 8 to Saturday, Sept. 16 (assorted dates as required)

The New Westminster Salmonbellies are playing the Six Nations Chiefs in the 2023 Mann Cup – which will determine Canada’s Senior A lacrosse champion. Games in the best-of-seven series will take place at Queen’s Park Arena on: Friday, Sept. 8; Saturday, Sept. 9; Monday, Sept. 11; Tuesday, Sept. 12; Wednesday, Sept. 13; Friday, Sept. 15; and Saturday, Sept. 16. Friday, Sept. 8

Movie by the River features The Super Mario Bros. Movie on the big screen at Westminster Pier Park. You’re invited to bring a blanket/chairs, snacks and beverages and enjoy a movie starting at dusk. The fun gets underway at 6 p.m. with activities (including photo ops with Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach) and pre-show New West film trivia from the Motion Picture Community Initiative. A food truck will be on-site and Eats concession will be open.

Saturday, Sept. 9

Recovery Day BC – an addiction and mental health information fair/music festival – returns to uptown New West with four stages, food trucks, a kids zone and more. It’s happening from noon to 6 p.m. at in the around Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street. This year’s headliner is Glass Tiger.

New West Craft Market, hosted by the Arts New West, features works by crafters, artisans, and makers to share their work with the community. It’s on the waterfront esplanade from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Info at www.artscouncilnewwest.org. 

Sunday, Sept. 10

Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen’s third annual charity bike-a-thon and walk-a-thon is raising money for a permanent facility in the downtown Eastside, so it can serve up to 20,000 free meals and drinks to people in need. The fundraiser starts and finishes in Queensborough, passing through the City of Richmond. It offers a 60 kilometre and 100k option for cyclists and a 2k and 10k option for walkers. It starts at 8 a.m. and ends around 2 p.m. Info and registration at https://gnfk.org/bike-walk/.

Saturday, Sept. 16

Bigger Ideas conference, taking place at Massey Theatre from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., is a career and wellness event for all women and those identifying (19+). Featuring speakers on topics including entrepreneurship, finance, wellness, career paths and more, it’s happening at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave.

Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23

Josh Blue, whose credits include performing at Just for Laughs, The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and Last Comic Standing, is appearing at the House of Comedy (7:30 and 9:45 p.m. shows on Friday and a 7 p.m. show on Saturday). Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy is in the Columbia Theatre, 530 Columbia St.

Saturday, Sept. 23

The opening reception for MEASURE, the latest exhibition at New Media Gallery, is on Saturday, Sept. 23. The welcome and four short artist talks take place in Anvil Theatre from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and the opening reception in the New Media Gallery is from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event at Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St.

Saturday, Sept. 23

The 12th annual Mushtari Begun Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance returns to Massey Theatre, featuring Pandit Salil Bhatt from India with his own 21-stringed instrument the Satvik Veena, vocalist Dr. Kamaljeet Gill (Edmonton), Kathak/Harmonium artiste Amika Kushwaha and Ghazal/Tabla Wizard Cassius Khan Music. It’s on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth St. Info & tickets: www.masseytheatre.com.

Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24

RiverFest, a free family-friendly festival that celebrates World Rivers Day and BC Rivers Day, includes an artisan market, a tugboat parade and live music. It’s happening on Saturday and Sunday on the waterfront esplanade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fraser River Discovery Centre, which is presenting RiverFest, is also planning online workshops. Thursdays

The New West Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in Tipperary Park (315 Queens Ave.), next to New Westminster City Hall. Fresh produce, prepared foods and alcohol are among the offerings at this family-friendly event that also includes live music and food trucks. This month’s markets are on Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28.
