Fridays on Front (shown here on a sunny summer evening in 2017) returns this weekend.

Punk music, a new multicultural festival and the return of one of the city’s most popular summer gatherings – they’re all happening this weekend in New West. Plus more!

Here’s a look at some of the great things happening around town that are well worth checking out this weekend.

It’s back! Fridays on Fronts returns today, and you can bet the crowds will be flocking to the Front Street Mews to check out all the action. Front Street will come alive with live music, food trucks, artisans and more. The area is also licensed, so you enjoy a beer and wine while you stroll around and enjoy the ambiance. It’s happening today (and every Friday until Aug. 19) from 5 to 9 p.m. on the Front Street Mews, between Sixth and McKenzie streets.

The new kid on the block: On Your Block is a new, free multicultural festival that includes a diverse lineup of live performances, food, and art. It also features a beer garden, more than 50 local vendors, and prize raffles. It’s happening from 1 to 9 p.m. at Tipperary Park, 315 Queens Ave.

Let’s make a deal: COVID forced the cancellation of the annual thrift sales and craft fairs at Century House, so you can bet there will be some great offerings at the Century House Summer Bazaar. It’s on Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St. Along with secondhand treasures, including books, jewellery and household items, you’ll find crafts, such as quilting, pottery and art items, lovingly created by the folks at Century House.

What about the kids? Families will definitely want to head to the Queen’s Park Farm (formerly the petting farm) for the Children’s Art Festival, running Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Organizers are promising “a unique artistic buffet” for kids young and old at this event, which is part of the Queen’s Park Arts Festival.

Arts abound: The Queen’s Park Arts Festival started on Wednesday – but it’s really revving up this weekend. The weekend’s lineup includes community dance with a live band and Royal City Swing (Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m.) and live music and theatre performances (Saturday and Sunday). Pointed Sticks (a Canadian punk/power pop band founded in 1978) will headline and close the festival with a performance on Sunday at 7 p.m.
