The lieutenant-governor of British Columbia has awarded a medal to a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fraser.

Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon recently presented 15-year-old Burnaby resident Max Titchai with the

Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans Medal of Merit. The ANAVETS medal is awarded to the top candidate attending a six-week senior course at a summer training centre.

Max was assessed to be the top sea cadet while attending the drill and ceremonial instructor course aboard the HMCS Quadra cadet summer training centre in Comox.

"I am very proud of the accomplishments of PO Titchai and all of the Fraser cadets this summer," said Lieut. Bryan Watson, commanding officer of Fraser

Sea Cadets. "Our cadets have taken top honours in sailing, seamanship and now have been awarded an ANAVETS medal to boot."

Fraser Seas Cadets is hosting a registration and information night on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. for youth aged 12 to 18 who are interested in joining. The program, which is free, includes sailing, international exchanges, high school credits and more. Training is held at 535 Derwent Way on Annacis Island.

Helpers wanted Fraser River Discovery Centre is in search of volunteers to help lead its popular school programs during the upcoming school year.

Educating students about the Fraser River is a primary goal of the centre that's located on New Westminster's waterfront.

"We have a big need for new school program volunteers this year because our program bookings are increasing so quickly," said Shannon King, the centre's

education coordinator.

Six different school programs are offered on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year, the goal of teaching children about the river's environmental, social and economic importance to the province and its citizens. Educational programs include a variety of handson activities, including mock archeological excavations, science experiments and educational games.

Volunteers don't need to have any special background or experience - only an interest in working

with children, a desire to learn about the Fraser River and a morning or afternoon to dedicate to Discovery Centre.

New volunteers are invited to learn more about volunteering at Discovery Centre by meeting with King before training begins on Sept. 18. Call 604-521-8401 or email info@fraser riverdiscovery.org by Sept. 10 to arrange a visit or to speak with King.
