An organization that provides a wide variety of services in New Westminster is holding a soiree – and you’re invited.
Family Services of Greater Vancouver is hosting The Soiree on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. After being held virtually for the past two years, the non-profit is thrilled that its signature fundraising event is returning to an in-person format.
“The Soiree takes a cue from classic circus entertainment, transforming the Terminal City Club into a delightful display of elevated carnival bites and roving performers,” said a notice about the event.
This year’s entertainment is provided by: Bill Costin, a classical and jazz pianist and composer; Cookin’ With Brass, a seven-piece funk band; and NZR Productions, an international circus company. The event also includes a live auction and a raffle featuring round-trip tickets from Air Canada, getaways, dining and shopping and experiences, and more.
All proceeds from The Soirée allow FSGV to provide critical programs and services to individuals and families in vulnerable circumstances across Great Vancouver.
Family Services of Greater Vancouver provides a wide variety of services in New Westminster, including; counselling and victim support; support for youth and parents; community education and prevention; ESL programs; community kitchens; literacy outreach; Neighbourhood Small Grants; assorted parenting programs; the Caring Neighbours Program at Christmas; and more.

Purpose Secondary School is having a Krispy Kreme donut sale fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or until sold out) outside the Columbia Street Sandwich Company, 550 Columbia St. Folks can buy one dozen of original Krispy Kreme donuts for $12 or two dozen for $23 (cash only).
The event is being held to raise funds to support: the breakfast and lunch program that’s offered to all students; activities and field trips linked to student learning and growth; and monthly bus passes for students who cannot afford the expense.\
Furry fundraiser
New West residents re invited to bring their furry friends to Queen’s Park for the Happy Campers fundraiser for animal welfare.
The event features hotdogs, drinks, treats and free tips on training. It’s taking place in the Queen’s Park picnic shelter south on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to the SPCA Champions for Animals foundation, which invites animal lovers to raise money for the BC SPCA’s work protecting and enhancing the quality of life for animals in B.C.

PechaKucha New West Volume 30 Rise Up is heading to Massey Theatre, in association with the BC Farmer’s Market Conference that’s taking place in New Westminster. Attendees will be engaged, entertained, and inspired by speakers sharing presentations (showing 20 images for 20 seconds each) about their passions. The doors and bar will open at 7 p.m. and the presentations begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at www.masseytheatre.com.
Celebrating business excellence
The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce will once again host the Platinum Awards, a celebration of business excellence.
Awards will be handed out in a number of categories: Service Excellence; Community Spirit Award; Bernie Legge Cultural Award; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award; Not For Profit of the Year; Environmental Leadership Award; Artist of the Year; Female Identifying Business leader of the year; Manufacturing Business of the Year; Citizen/Business of the Year; Tope Entrepreneur Under 40; New Business of the Year; and Tourism Based Business of the Year.
Unlike last year’s online event, this year’s event will be in-person. It’s taking place at the Anvil Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m.
