Gay-straight alliance launched

First meeting of seniors' group attracts more than 100 people

The inaugural gathering of a gay/straight alliance group at Century House was a huge success, said one of the organizers.

One hundred and 12 people turned up for the afternoon and about 90 attended the evening event, which included a screening of the film Gen Silent, a documentary that chronicles the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors in America.

"We were quite excited about having it and even more excited by how it turned out," said Vance McFadyen.

A UBC sociology class also attended the event.

"They skipped their class in order to come to this, so I thought that was pretty nice," explained McFadyen, the man behind the concept for the city's annual gay pride festival.

The group is having its first gay/straight alliance meeting on April 11, 1 p.m. at Century House.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting.

McFadyen said the overwhelming interest in the first meeting, which along with the film screening included a panel discussion, speaks to the city's "diverse and accepting" nature.
