Group helps grads celebrate their big day

You Wear it Well - Just for Grads is hard at work preparing for grad 2012.

A small group of local women formed the nonprofit society to help underprivileged students from New Westminster Secondary School attend their graduation celebration with pride. Because some students' families don't have the money to cover the costs that go along with attending grad, the women wanted to help provide clothing for the big day.

"Our committee is working hard to prepare for our upcoming third annual Boutique Day near the end of April," said Cindy Carlson, one of the group's founders. "We have been working closely with NWSS counsellors to ensure we support all of the students in need."

The committee, which is comprised of Darcey Sudeyko, Barb Henderson, Joanne Lapp, Kathy Wilson and Carlson, appreciates donations of formal wear and accessories from local residents and businesses. You Wear It Well is still in need of dresses, shoes, evening shawls, handbags and jewelry for this year's graduation.

The Cinderella Project, which provides a similar service in Greater Vancouver, attributes some of its success to donations of shoes and clothing from retailers. Anyone who is interested in helping can drop off donations at: Moore's Men's Clothing (Queensborough Landing, 805 Boyd St.); VanCity Savings Credit Union (511 Sixth St.); and Global Hair Salon (625 Belmont St.)

Anyone wishing to make alternate arrangements can contact Kathy at 778-231-7184 or email [email protected]. Financial donations can also be mailed to Royal City Education Foundation, (c/o You Wear It Well - Just for Grads in memo box), 1001 Columbia St., second floor, New Westminster, V3M 1C4. A tax receipt will be issued if requested.

FUNDRAISER SET

One of New Westminster's longtime daycare centres is raising funds for new outdoor play equipment.

Queens Avenue Daycare, founded in 1973, is inviting community members to a March 18 Name That Tune fundraiser.

"We are reaching out to current parents and alumni," said Naomi Perks, a member of the centre's board of directors. "It is an institution in New West."

Families who've attended the centre in the past - or anyone looking for something fun to do on a Sunday night - are invited to attend the fundraiser. For $15, they'll get their choice of a veggie or beef burger, fries and a beverage - as well as the chance to play Name That Tune.

Perks explains that professional DJs will play snippets of songs and teams will try to guess the song. The winning team will win a gift certificate from the Terminal Pub.

The fundraiser, which takes place on Sunday, March 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 15 12th St., also includes raffles.

CHURCH HISTORY

The New Westminster Historical Society will be taking on the Presbyterian Church this month.

That's the topic of this month's meeting of the New Westminster Historical Society, which is being held on Wednesday, March 21 at 7: 30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library at 716 Sixth Ave.

"In March of 1862, 150 years ago, the first Presbyterian minister, Rev. Robert Jamieson, arrived in New Westminster to establish his church on the banks of the Fraser River," said a press release.

"This presentation will look at the development of this denomination in the city with a series of stories and photographs of the early St. Andrew's Church, and then adding other Presbyterian churches such as Knox, St. Stephen's, St. Aidan's, First Presbyterian and a couple from the West End."

The program is free, and everyone is welcome. There is no need to pre-register.
