YOU'RE MOVING!

An impressive number of Royal City residents have taken the City of New Westminster up on its challenge to get moving.

The city launched the Biggest Mover challenge six weeks ago with the goal of increasing the activity levels of residents.

"The response has been overwhelming, and we have 476 people signed up for the challenge," said Sandy Earle, the city's Active Communities programmer. "New Westminster has become a city of movers."

While the focus of the initiative has been to increase people's activ-ity levels, some residents are also using it as an incentive to lose weight. Optional weigh-ins are held every two weeks.

"Several have lost more than 10 pounds already," Earle said. "Participants are particularly enjoying the weekly challenges that are all health and wellness focused. Most of the communication is done through email and I'm hearing some great stories and feedback."

Along the way, two contests are being held in which residents can win prizes.

Kelvin Chao was the lucky winner of the first draw, which was a gift basket from Thrifty Foods.

In addition to donating gift baskets for the contests, the Sapperton grocery store has also offered a series of nutrition tours to Biggest Mover participants. A dietician provides participants with information about various foods.

"The tour is excellent and teaches people how to make better choices in the face of all the things we're bombarded with at the grocery store," Earle said.
