With Halloween around the corner there’s no better time to highlight some of the more recent horror fiction titles available at New Westminster Public Library.

If you’re looking for a recent work in the haunted house genre, try Cherie Priest’s The Family Plot, the story of some graves that are accidentally disturbed at a mysterious estate.

For some laughs with your hauntings try Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix. In this novel, the haunting takes place in the fictional Orsk Furniture (a parody of popular Swedish furniture chains).

For some mystery with your monsters, try Carter & Lovecraft by Jonathan L. Howard. Private investigator Daniel Carter learns there’s more fact than fiction to the Cthulhu Mythos when he teams up with bookseller Emily Lovecraft, a descendent of noted horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.

For zombie action, try Mike Carey’s The Girl with All the Gifts, about zombie-like infected known as “hungries”, some of whom retain the ability to think and communicate.

If dolls give you the creeps, don’t miss The Doll Collection, featuring short stories by authors such as Seanan Maguire, Joyce Carol Oates, Genevieve Valentine, and others.

For science fiction that invokes medical fears and body horror, try the Parasitology series by Mira Grant: Parasite, Symbiont, and Chimera. Another disturbing title about parasites is Nick Cutter’s The Troop, which pits a Boy Scout troop against a medical experiment gone awry, set in the wilderness of PEI.

J. Lincoln Fenn’s Dead Souls is the story of woman who jokingly makes a deal with the devil, only to find out later that the deal and its consequences are only too real.

Joe Hill, son of Stephen King, is also making a name for himself in horror and dark fantasy. His latest novel The Fireman tells the story of a world ravaged by an infection that causes spontaneous combustion.
