The Hyack Festival will be giving out more cash than ever before to participants in this year’s Hyack Ambassador Program.
“With the rising cost of tuition, the Hyack Ambassador Program organizing committee acknowledged it was time for a change,” said a press release from Hyack. “After seeking additional funding for several years, Hyack is proud to announce that they can now provide a significant contribution to the post-secondary education of young women in the city of New Westminster.”
The young woman who is named Miss New Westminster will now receive a $5,000 scholarship, an increase from $1,000, and the Hyack Princess will receive $3,000, an increase from $750. In addition, new scholarships totalling $2,000 have been created for the remaining members of the ambassador team.
According to the Hyack Festival Association, additional post-secondary scholarship awards provided by community supporters and local businesses means young women taking part in the 2021 program are eligible for a total of $24,000 in awards.
Hyack is now accepting applications for its 2021 program from young women In New Westminster who are aged 16 to 19. Interviews will begin in September and training for successful applicants will get underway in October.
Participants will complete workshops and training on leadership, career skills, personal development. They will also take part in local service and volunteer opportunities.
“The Hyack Ambassadors uphold a mandate of ‘Serving Our Community – Representing Our City’, engaging the community in New Westminster, with the opportunity to travel B.C. and the Pacific Northwest as representatives of the Royal City,” said the press release. “As one of the longest-running youth programs in New Westminster, the Hyack Ambassador Program strives to encourage, educate and empower young women through these activities.”
