New Westminster and Burnaby mayors recently donned gold lamépants to serve up breakfast at the Union Gospel Mission.
The breakfast event was the wrap-up for the Walk 30 Burnaby/New West 2019 community walking challenge, which saw New Westminster winning the coveted Golden Shoe for the second year in a row. As part of the challenge, New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote and Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley also put out a challenge that would see the losing city’s mayor wear gold lamépants and serve breakfast at a local non-profit.
Hurley donned gold lamépants specially made for him by Royal City Wrestling. Cote, who first wore his own gold lamépants when making his wrestling debut with the Royal City Defenders in March, dusted off his flashy pants for the recent visit from Burnaby’s mayor.
According to the Walkers Caucus, community members logged more than one million minutes of walking during this year’s walking challenge, which is 300,000 more minutes than last year. On average, participants walked 40 minutes per day this year (compared to 27 minutes last year) and school district participation nearly doubled in both cities.
“The question is: are we still walking?” said a press release from the Walkers Caucus. “What better time than the summer months to continue some good, new habits? Are you getting out into your community on foot to attend some local events and connect with others, or to get that sunshine and fresh air that are good for your health on your way to get the groceries?”
