Music, gardening and more in store

Local music legend Dal Richards is bringing his big band sound back to the Royal City tonight.

Richards and his orchestra will perform at a fundraising concert at the Columbia Theatre on Friday, June 8 (tonight).

The show is a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis, a devastating disease that claimed the life of New Westminster resident Eva Markvoort in 2008.

"Eva's life was cut short at the tender age of 25 by cystic fibrosis - but not before she was able to develop a lasting legacy that promotes organ donation and support for crucial research," said local arts promoter Tony Antonias. "This is precisely the reason we urge you to support this fundraiser. - Knowing my pal Dal Richards as well as I do, I can confidently say he'll wow audiences and you'll hear lots of the big band sounds you've come to love."

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show takes place at 7: 30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at www. thecolumbia.ca or 6045224500.

GET GARDENING

The Plant a Row/Grow a Row program's weekly collection of food donations begins this weekend.

The program accepts donations of fruits and veggies, which are then donated to the New Westminster Food Bank.

The idea is that gardeners are encouraged to grow an extra row of produce to donate to the cause - but store-bought produce is also appreciated.

Donations are accepted on Sunday mornings from June 10 to Oct. 14 between 9: 30 and 10: 30 a.m. at the front entrance to St.

Thomas More Collegiate at 7450 12th Ave. in Burnaby - just across the New West border.

Claude LeDoux, a New Westminster resident and the City of New Westminster's horticulturist, coordinates the program.
