The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society’s annual shred-athon was a win-win for residents looking to get rid of old documents and community groups in need of support.
At the society’s June 22 event, community members dropped off papers for shredding – with their documents being safety shredded on site by Shred Wise. For firefighters, the by-donation event was a chance to raise money for various community projects and groups.
“We had a lineup here before we started. A lot of people have come out and seem to be very pleased that we are running this event,” said firefighter Eric Picher, who organizes the shredding event. “It’s been very well attended, both from the firefighters that are off duty as well as members of the community who have made some very generous donations.”
Picher said some folks dropped off small bags filled with papers while others had a truck containing a couple of hundred pounds worth of documents for shredding.
“It’s going well,” Picher, the society’s recording secretary, told the Record at the event. “It’s a big money maker for our charitable society so we are able to give back to various individuals in need around the community.”
The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society, comprised of all current members of New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services, raises money for various charities and projects, including local food banks, educational bursaries, Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, the children’s Christmas toy drive and the IAFF Burn Fund.
“Thank you very much for all of your support in supporting the charitable society and helping us support the community,” Picher said.
