New West firefighters will be raising money for local charities this weekend – one tree at a time.
The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society is holding its annual tree chipping fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 6 and Sunday, Jan. 7. It’s running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the New Westminster City Hall parking lot, 511 Royal Ave.
Ryder Chidley, a probationary firefighter with NWFRS, is organizing this year’s event, with support from fellow charitable society members/firefighters Sean Mcphee and Blair Lasell. As in recent years, Chidley noted that this year’s tree chipping event is a drive-thru event at city hall.
“This is one of the society’s annual events that takes place and we look forward to it every year,” Chidley said. “Thousands of dollars are raised through our efforts, and these funds are allocated directly back into those in need right here in the city of New Westminster.”
Trees will be chipped on site.
The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society raises money that is disperses to a wide variety of community programs and non-profits, including the pediatric unit at Royal Columbian Hospital, the Burn Fund, Muscular Dystrophy Canada, the Purpose Society, New Westminster Family Place and the Union Gospel Mission. All New West firefighters belong to the society, which hosts a variety of fundraisers including the annual tree chipping and shred-athon events.
