Can you help fill Santa’s sleigh?
Volunteers from the Royal Canadian Legion are accepting donations outside the New Westminster Legion this week as part of their campaign to collect food and cash for the Salvation Army’s food bank. Volunteers will be stationed outside the Legion at 631 Sixth St. from 7 to 10 a.m. Monday to Saturday to collect donations.
“Well, it was a cold snowy start but our volunteers had a couple of drop-offs today,” said Michelle Lapre, Royal Canadian Legion #2 operation manager, after Monday’s collection event. “We have hot cocoa and coffee to go for everyone that drops off non-perishable food items or cash donations.”
Some of the most needed items include: hot and cold cereals; canned and dry beans; canned tuna and chicken; canned vegetables, soups and stews; peanut butter and jelly; unsalted nuts; pasta and pasta sauces; coffee, tea and hot chocolate; apple sauce; cookies; broths (chicken, beef and vegetable) and stock; and rice and quinoa. Donations of baby food, formula, diapers and pull-ups are also appreciated.
The local Legion recently learned that the Salvation Army in New West is in “dire need” of new unwrapped toys for Christmas, so it decided to support the Salvation Army as part of its annual Christmas drive.
Along with food and cash donations, the Legion is collecting new, unwrapped toys for children aged zero to 16 years.
While the drive-thru events are happening each morning this week, donations can also be dropped off at the Legion (631 Sixth St.) Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. The deadline to drop off toys is noon on Friday, Dec. 10.
