New Westminster students demonstrated their artistic flair in the city's annual Heritage Week contests.
Although the theme of Heritage Week 2012 was Energy in B.C.: A Powerful Past, A Sustainable Future, the City of New Westminster chose to highlight another special heritage milestone as part of this year's contests.
Royal Columbian Hospital, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2012, was the theme of this year's Heritage Week activities.
"Over 800 entries were received, so you can understand why it was difficult for the judges to choose the winners," Mayor Wayne Wright said at the recent Heritage Week presentations. "We are very pleased with the enthusiastic response and the quality of entries.
"These contests highlight the importance of our community's heritage to us. Thanks to all who participated again this year."
Kindergarten to Grade 3 students coloured a line drawing of Royal Columbian Hospital, circa 1912, that was done by Julia Dykstra, a planning clerk in the city's development services department.
In the kindergarten category, Samantha Mah (Lord Tweedsmuir) took top prize, Peter Darwish (Lord Tweedsmuir) placed second and Sophia Girardi (Lord Kelvin) placed third. Honourable mentions went to: Arshdeep Jhajj (Connaught Heights); Brendan Penner (F.W. Howay); Ana Crudu (Herbert Spencer); and Audrey Russell and Brant Lee (Richard McBride).
Harman Dhaliwal (Queen Elizabeth) was the winner in the Grade 1 category, while Aimee Lever (Herbert Spencer) was second and Jamie Lam (Lord Tweedsmuir) placed third. Honourable mentions went to Summer Thomas (Herbert Spencer); Amelia Wang and Tianna Downey (John Robson); Marissa Ascher (Lord Tweedsmuir); and Vikrampal Singh Khangura (Queen Elizabeth).
In the Grade 2 category, Carly Neumeier (Richard McBride) won first prize, Nina Bao (Richard McBride) placed second and Joshua Javier (Lord Kelvin) was third. Grade 2 honourable mentions went to Teela Leduc (F.W. Howay); Dominic Coelho (Herbert Spencer); Alisha Hannay (Lord
Tweedsmuir); Sharyn Alobu (John Robson); Ayaan Shammed (Queen Elizabeth); and Chiara Zlatovic-Diewald (Richard McBride).
Jasmeen Kaur Dhaliwal (Queen Elizabeth) took the top prize in the Grade 3 category, while Hareena Kaur Khangura (Queen Elizabeth) was second and Sarah Landrath (Lord Tweedsmuir) was third. Owen Bishop (F.W. Howay), Dominik Doray (Herbert Spencer), Lilly Ujfalusi (Queen Elizabeth) and Medo Goward (Urban Academy) earned honourable mentions. Students in Grade 4 and 5 celebrated Heritage Week by taking part in a heritage poster or photography contest.
Anastasia Sabinin (F.W. Howay) placed first in the Grade 4 category, while Kaya Mah (Lord Tweedsmuir) placed sec-ond and Gabrielle Villareal (Queen Elizabeth) was third.
In the Grade 5 category, Amanda Phillips (F.W. Howay) took top spot, Ben Paul (Lord Tweedsmuir) earned second place and Laurel Dabb (Richard McBride) placed third. Liam Waldie earned a special recognition for his entry.
Numerous businesses and sponsors contributed cash and donated items for prizes.
