What goes into food waste?

Pizza boxes, paper plates OK - but keep out oils, fats and butter

The city's approval of a new multifamily food scraps recycling program means all residents will be able to recycle products such as cooked and uncooked food, meat, dairy, bones, egg shells and coffee grounds and filters. They'll also be able to place food-soiled paper napkins, paper plates, and pizza boxes in the bins that will be provided for the food scrap recycling program.

Items that shouldn't be included in the carts include: oils, fats, butter; pet waste or pet hair; and food containers (except soiled pizza boxes or paper plates).

The City of New Westminster is aiming to implement the multi-family food scraps recycling program citywide this summer. Teams will launch the program at every building complex in New Westminster over a six-week period.

The city's decision comes after a pilot project was conducted at six multi-family buildings in New Westminster.

All residents will be provided with the same educational tools and materials that helped make the pilot program a success.

As part of the pilot project, education materials were distributed to residents and lobby displays were set up to raise awareness.

"The multi-family food scrap recycling program is another step forward towards meeting and exceeding Metro Vancouver's target of 70 per cent waste diversion throughout the region," said Mayor Wayne Wright. "It's a key part of New Westminster's commitment to sustainability, and we'll continue to work with residents to offer even more ways to reduce our environmental footprint."
