What’s happening in New Westminster in November?

The return of the Hydrant Cup, the launch of the first Dialogue on Death and Dying and some unique shopping opportunities are among this month’s happenings in New West

It’s hard to believe it’s November already, but here we are. Here’s a look at some of the great events taking place this month in New West.

Tuesday, Nov. 1

Fraser River Dialogues — Collaboration in the Spirit of snəw̓eyəɬ is an online presentation featuring the First Nations Fisheries Legacy Fund, which has six First Nations working together for the health of aquatic ecosystems of the lower Fraser River and Burrard Inlet. The online presentation, part of Fraser River Discovery Centre’s Fraser River Dialogues presentation series, is on Zoom from 7 to 8:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Nov. 1. Info: www.fraserriverdiscovery.org.

Wednesday, Nov. 2 to Saturday, Nov. 5

Dialogue on Death & Dying is a four-day community engagement project being put on by the New West Hospice Society and the Century House Association. The event aims to normalize conversations about death and dying. It includes a variety of free daytime and nighttime events.

* Poetry Night, featuring New West poet laureate Elliott Slinn, poet laureate emeritus Candice James and open mic from the Royal City Literary Arts Society. It’s on Wednesday, Nov. 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

* PEACH Night, featuring a presentation by Dr. Naheed Dosani, a palliative care physician and founder of the Palliative Education and Care for the Homeless (PEACH). Dosani will join the in-person audience via Zoom. It’s on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. Free but register at www.eventbrite.ca (search for PEACH).

* Performance Night, featuring Elliott Slinn, Jane Slemon and Friends, and The Cat Murphy Band with Kaitlyn Deavy, who will be singing and reflecting about death and dying with words and music. It’s on Friday, Nov. 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

* Prose Night will have Dr. Susan Breiddal reading from her book, In the Shadows of Angels. Local seniors will share their stories on death and dying, and audience members will be given an opportunity to discuss their reactions to the readings. It’s on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 3 to Saturday, Nov. 5

Rise Up: Working Together From Resiliency to Sustainability — the BC Farmers Markets’ annual conference — is taking place in New West from Nov. 3 to 5. The event includes networking opportunities, workshops, a tradeshow, and welcome reception, Friday luncheon and awards, and an evening of Pecha Kucha. Thursday’s workshops will be held at the Inn at the Quay, while Friday and Saturday’s workshops and tradeshow will be at Massey Theatre.

Friday, Nov. 4

The Hydrant Cup returns to Queen’s Park Arena with on-ice fun, including the game between the Vancouver Canucks Alumni and the New Westminster firefighters hockey teams. Off-ice action includes: an autograph session with Canucks alumni from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in the lobby; kids’ activities (including balloon twisting and hockey-themed glitter tattoos); a Steel & Oak beer garden; a visit from the Reel Mac and Cheese food truck; and an autograph signing by some members of the NLL’s Vancouver Warriors professional box lacrosse team. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for the pre-game fun, and the puck drops at 7 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society, which raises money for various local non-profit organizations and programs.

Tickets for the Hydrant Cup are $5 for children and $10 for adults. They’re available at the Queen’s Park and Moody Park arenas, the Glenbrook Fire Hall (1 East Sixth Ave.) and G&F Financial (760 Sixth St.)

Friday, Nov. 4

Pecha Kucha New West Volume 30 Rise Up – part of the BC Farmers Market’s conference – is on Friday, Nov. 4 from 8 to 10 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. This evening of storytelling features short presentations (just over six minutes each) accompanied by 20 images. Confirmed speakers include: Jen Arbo; Johnathan Baylis; Alexandra Brigham; Mary Chernoff; Raymond Liens; Melissa Maltais; Barb Pearson; Bill Picard; Kevin Schwantje; and Scott Ashton Swan.

Friday, Nov. 18

The Group of Five is holding its Tis the Season for Giving fundraiser, which raises money to purchase much-needed equipment at Royal Columbian Hospital. The event includes hors d’oeuvres from Mr. Mom’s World, a cash bar, a silent auction (featuring items like bottles of wine) and a chance to mingle with community members. It’s on Friday, Nov. 18 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Lodge in Queen’s Park. Tickets are $40, and will be available at the door or by calling 604-522-7196.

Saturday, Nov. 19

Ecole Herbert Spencer Christmas Craft Fair 2022 gives you a chance to shop from local artisans, vendors and student crafters, where you’ll find unique gifts for family and friends. You can also stop in the bistro for a light lunch and yummy baked goods, enjoy music by rooving carollers, enter your name into a raffle draw and take photos in front of a special backdrop. It’s all happening on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 605 Second St.

Saturday, Nov. 26

Disobedient Elves Alternative Market will feature more than a dozen local alternative artists selling their wares. It’s on Saturday, Nov. 26 from noon to 7 p.m. at Bully’s Studio, 67 Sixth St. in downtown New West.
