This is a great weekend to celebrate (and support) community in New West.

From sales and events supporting community organizations – or a national hero – to unique entertainment options, it’s all happening this weekend in New West. Here are the Record’s top picks for the Sept. 14 and 15 weekend.

Saturday, Sept. 14

Century House thrift and craft sale

Hunt for secondhand treasures – as well as handcrafted arts and crafts and baked goods – at Century House’s popular thrift and craft sale. Jewelry, tools, collectibles, jewelry, art, housewares, and knickknacks will be among the items available at the sale, which raises funds in support of Century House’s services for seniors.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where:  Century House, 620 Eighth St.
  • Details: Free. BYOB – bring your own bag. Cash is preferred but credit and debit cards will be accepted for purchases of more than $10.

Exhibition opening and artists’ talk

Check out the works of six artists from around the world who are featured in MASTER, the latest exhibition at the New Media Gallery. They’ve all appropriated the films of one celebrated director and used video, sound, robotics and AI to create startlingly new interpretations. Today’s grand opening event includes talks by some of the featured artists.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 14. The opening reception is from 1 to 4 p.m. in the New Media Gallery. Artists talks, featuring two of the artists included in the exhibition, will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in Anvil Theatre.
  • Where: Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St.
  • Details: Free

Backstage Sale

Shop for treasures from Royal City Musical Theatre productions, including set pieces and props, at the Backstage Sale. Behind-the-scenes items from Massey Theatre, including soundboards, road cases and more, will also be featured at the Backstage Sale.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where: Outside Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. (on the outdoor lawn area on the side of our arts complex facing Moody Park Arena)

Community Bottle Drop

Support local community projects and clean house by taking your rinsed off bottles, cans and refundable containers to the Royal City Rotary Club’s monthly community bottle drop.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m. to noon
  • Where: 166 Sixth St. (across from city hall)
  • Details: Free

Sunday, Sept. 15

Terry Fox Run

Help support Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer by taking part in the annual Terry Fox Run. The New West event features a level, scenic route along the boardwalk; participants can cover as much ground as they choose up to 10 kilometres.

  • When: Sunday, Sept. 15 – in-person registration begins at 9a.m. and the run/walk/ride/wheel starts at 10 a.m.
  • Where: River Market, 810 Quayside Dr.
  • Details: No entry fee to participate in the run. Free food and drinks available for all participants. T-shirt sales also available.

Art Sundays

Listen to artist Fiona Tang discuss her works at this weekend’s Art Sundays’ free arts programming. Tang’s solo exhibition, Journey, is currently on display at The Gallery at Queen’s Park.
