The Rainbow Chorus of New Westminster has a musical adventure planned for its upcoming concert.
RCNW is presenting From Pride Rock to Broadway: A Musical Adventure on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at The Sanctuary on Sixth, which is located at the corner of Sixth Street and Queens Avenue. Doors open at 6:20 p.m.
“This term’s concert contains music that has been in the movies and on Broadway – and sometimes both,” said Margaret Cormier, choir admin team chair. “It truly is a musical adventure. Think from pride rock on the savannah with Circle of Life from the Lion King to Defying Gravity from Wicked and many musicals in between. This music will make you laugh and lift you up to what could be if there were no limits, if you are willing to try to fly. There are also songs from Hamilton and The Jungle Book. Anything is possible.”
The Rainbow Chorus of New Westminster formed in March of 2022, just as the pandemic was calming. This non-auditioned community choir, under the direction of Frank Zieginson and accompanist James Dekker, is made up of approximately 63 members and welcomes everyone, however they identify.
“All that we ask is that you bring a love for music and a willingness to stretch yourself musically,” Cormier said.
The choir held its first concert in June of 2022 and has hosted two concerts annually ever since, usually in February and June. It also holds a free festive singalong in December where choir members get to sing with the audience.
In addition, the Rainbow Chorus of New Westminster has performed at Pride New West and Vancouver Pride celebrations, New Westminster Hospice events, and the grand opening of təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre. Choir members have also carolled with seniors in care centres in New Westminster.
“The RCNW is a community of people who love to raise our voices in song, and come together to do just that,” Cormier said.
Tickets are available in advance online: $20 for adults; $15 for children and seniors; and $50 for patrons. Tickets can also be purchased at the door: $25 for adults and $20 for children and seniors.
Tickets for From Pride Rock to Broadway: A Musical Adventure and information about the choir can be found on the Rainbow Chorus of New Westminster’s new website or its Facebook page.
New members are always welcome; registration is now open for the choir’s next term, which begins Feb. 10. The choir practises every Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at The Sanctuary on Sixth.
“We welcome everyone who wants to sing regardless of experience,” Cormier said. “This concert is a chance to share with the community what they are missing by not joining us.”
