Calling all artists in New Westminster.
The New Westminster Public Library is looking for diverse artists to contribute to its Art in the Library shows in 2023.
The library is looking for submissions from artists who’d like to have a show at the library this year. It’s searching for 11 artists to have month-long exhibitions in the upstairs gallery space.
“We are especially interested in showcasing the full spectrum of our diverse community so if you are a BIPOC artist, live with a disability, have a different gender expression or are LGBTQ2S (for example), let us know,” the library’s call for submissions notes.
Interested? Here’s what you need to know, courtesy of the library:
Can I share a show with other artists?
The call is aimed at solo exhibitions, but group submissions are welcome as long as artists “consider the cohesion” of their proposed exhibition.
Who chooses the artists?
The library has a community art selection committee that includes one library trustee, library staff and members of the community who are active in the creative arts in their personal or professional lives.
What kind of art is acceptable?
Art must be two-dimensional, original and “responsive to the diverse interests of the entire New Westminster community.” It’s also asked to be consistent with the principle of “respect for the dignity and worth of all people.”
Art must be ready for display and hanging.
(Check out the link at bottom for all the submission criteria.)
Who’s eligible?
Priority is given to exhibitors who live or work in the City of New Westminster. Artists and groups who have exhibited previously are encouraged to apply. Submissions can’t be for work that has already been seen in New Westminster in the preceding 12 months or that will be displayed in any other New Westminster gallery during 2023.
What are the timelines?
- Applications must be submitted by Feb. 11.
- The selection committee will meet in early March, and artists will be notified in late March.
- Exhibition dates will be confirmed in April, and monthly exhibits then run from May 2023 to March 2024.
