A theatrical production that received eight Jessie Richardson Theatre Award nominations – and won four – when it was produced at The Cultch in 2022 is coming to New West.

Anvil Theatre is presenting Hannah Moscovitch’s Bunny from Thursday, Feb. 8 to Sunday, Feb. 18. Bunny has been described by reviewers as funny, smart and honest.

“Moving from object towards agent, ‘Sorrel’ (Emma Slipp) discovers the power of her own desire. Armed only with Victorian literature and an unconventional upbringing, she struggles to find her way,” said a synopsis of the play. “With Bunny, Moscovitch dives into societal inhibitions, desire, and sex.

When it was first produced at The Cultch by Mindy Parfitt’s The Search Party, Bunny won four Jessie awards, including Best Production and Best Performance by a Leading Actor.

Bunny was written by Hannah Moscovitch, who was the 2021 winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for drama.

“In most love stories, a man is pursuing a woman who is hesitating,” Moscovitch said in a news release. “In that structure, the man is the protagonist and the woman is the antagonist. We have 2,000 years of that. Bunny is a whole rewriting of the structure.”

Note: This play has sexual content and is recommended for mature audiences.

Following a preview performance on Thursday, Feb. 8 and an opening night show on Friday, Feb. 9 (both at 7:30 p.m.), shows will take place in Anvil Theatre on Feb. 10, 11, 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be matinees on Feb. 10, 17, and 18 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $36.50 to $46.50, and are available at wwwticketsnw.ca or 604-521-5050.
