A New West resident is taking to the stage in the lead role in APPLAUSE! Musicals in Concerts' 50th production.
Cecilly Day is making her APPLAUSE! debut as Leona Samish in Do I Hear A Waltz?, which features the music of Richard Rodgers (Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Carousel, Cinderella), the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents (West Side Story and Gypsy).
“It’s a rare chance to see/hear this mostly shelved, forgotten and rare musical which was a unique collaboration of these three titans of the musical theatre genre,” said an APPLAUSE! press release.
According to APPLAUSE!, this touching, bittersweet musical centres around a young tourist with romantic notions of love waiting to be discovered.
“She uses her meager savings for a long-dreamed-of trip and decides to travel alone to the city of gondolas, the grand canal, the piazza San Marco, and the Rialto Bridge,” said a synopsis of the play. “Under the magical spell of mid 1960’s Venice, she falls for a charming Italian shopkeeper and learns that, even in the most romantic of settings, love comes with a price.”
Day is making her debut with APPLAUSE! but she’s no stranger to the stage, having worked in theatres across Western Canada. Her theatrical credits include: Little Shop of Horrors (Arts Club Theatre and The Citadel Theatre); Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Sound of Music (Arts Club Theatre Company); Escape to Margaritaville, Ragtime (Theatre Calgary); and Wizard of Oz (Western Canada Theatre).
The New West resident has also worked in Vancouver's film and TV scene, appearing on TV series such as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and A Million Little Things, and in movies including Prom Pact and Love Hard. Day also voices the character of Miyana in Dragon Prince on Netflix.
Do I Hear A Waltz? will run four performances this coming weekend: Friday, Dec. 1 (8 p.m.); Saturday, Dec. 2 (2 and 8 p.m.); and Sunday, Dec. 3 (2 p.m.) It’s on stage at the PAL Theatre, 581 Cardero St. in Vancouver (Coal Harbour).
