You can enjoy a private movie screening, a glass of wine, sweets and door prizes - and help a good cause at the same time.
New Westminster is rolling out the red carpet for a private screening of the new Brooke Shields comedy The Hot Flashes on Thursday, Oct. 10, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The movie involves five middle-aged women, former high school basketball champions, who challenge a crew of sassy high school girls to a basketball tournament in order to raise funds to keep a mobile mammography unit operating in their community.
The all-star cast includes Shields, Wanda Sykes, Daryl Hannah, Virginia Madsen and Camryn Manheim.
The movie screening is being organized by members of B2B NOW (Business-to-Business Network of Women): Heidi Clarkson, Sonja Curry of Sonja Curry Design Inc. and Robyn Murrell of Zhoosh Fitness by Design.
They're being supported by Mardi Denis, a New West Canadian Cancer Society volunteer, and Huda Al-Saedy, Canadian Cancer Society team lead for annual giving.
"We are excited to bring this film to our city. It has been a fun and rewarding experience so far," Clarkson said in a press release. "More importantly, it allows us once again the opportunity to support the Canadian Cancer Society. If we can encourage even one person to get mammography during this process, it will truly be a success."
Pre-sold tickets for the night out are $25 each, including the movie, a glass of Hot Flash wine from Kelowna's House of Rose Winery, plus sweets, coffee/tea, door prizes and a raffle during the reception.
The reception starts at 6 p.m. with the movie starting at 7 p.m.
"We have had an outpouring of support from the community," Clarkson said. "Some of our main sponsors are from Shops at New West Station - these include Landmark Cinema offering their venue, management is sponsoring the wine, Starbucks is serving up coffee/tea and Safeway and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory are contributing sweets."
Only 238 tickets are available, and those interested in the screening are urged to buy early, since the Kelowna event sold out in four days.
The movie is not available in Canada in theatres, so this is the only time the Lower Mainland audience will be able to see it on the big screen. One hundred tickets will be available online at http://thehotflashes.eventbrite.ca. An additional 138 will be available for purchase starting Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Mid-Century Modern HOME at River Market or at the Dublin Castle Neighbourhood Grill.
"Through this event, the New West community is helping to make a real impact in the fight for life," said Al-Saedy. "About half of all cancers can be prevented, and we are delighted to have this opportunity to raise cancer awareness while watching a fun, empowering movie."
