The Massey Theatre Society is celebrating the beginning of a new chapter in its existence.
The theatre society’s 25-year lease agreement with the City of New Westminster was signed earlier this month – and, on Saturday, the group invited community members in to see what it’s all about.
The society now runs the Eighth & Eight arts complex, which incorporates the Massey Theatre, Plaskett Gallery and surrounding studio, rehearsal and multipurpose spaces that were part of the old New Westminster Secondary School.
“The expansion into former school areas surrounding the theatre will enable professional artists to work in multiple disciplines while infusing the community with new cultural opportunities and creative endeavours,” says a press release from the society. “Digital media labs are planned along with smaller performance spaces; interdisciplinary festivals and visual arts exhibitions will integrate the space into a lively artistic hub for the Metro Vancouver region.”
On Nov. 6, the group held an open house so people could stop in to get a preview of its plans for the 35,000-square-foot facility.
Photographer Jennifer Gauthier stopped by the open house to check out the new space. Here’s some of what she found.
