It's the Thanksgiving long weekend - and a perfect time to get out and enjoy and appreciate all that we have in the Royal City. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top 5 (or More) Things to Do This Weekend, and we offer the following suggestions for the Oct. 11 to 13 weekend.

1.  Tickle your funny bone at Lafflines Comedy Club, where comedian Patrick Maliha takes to the stage on Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12 (two shows). Maliha's website says he's the world record holder for the most impressions in one minute, beating Dana Carvey's previous record. For showtime and ticket information, visit www.lafflines.com or call 604-525-2262. Lafflines is located in the Columbia Theatre at 530 Columbia St.

2.  Speak up at Renaissance Books Store, which is having an open mike event where people can read their original poems, books and songs. The event features David Burnell, author of A Nightingale Song, and is hosted by Janene White. The action takes place on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 43 Sixth St.

3.  Attend a poetry workshop with prize-wining poets Jonina Kirton and Franci Loen. They're leading workshops being held on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Oct. 26 in the community room at 700 Park Cres. The cost is on a sliding scale from $10 to $15.  The focus is on found poems, list poems and erasure poems. The cost includes refreshments. To register, contact [email protected] or [email protected].

4.  Take advantage of this weekend's sunny weather (at least that's what the forecast said when The Record went to press) and enjoy a fall stroll. Sapperton Landing, Westminster Pier Park and Glenbrook Ravine are some great places to admire the changing seasons, as are Moody Park and Queen's Park. Take your pick and get out there and enjoy fall in its splendour.

5.  Get your tickets for next week's Homelessness Action Week dinner, which features Linda Cullen and Bob Robertson, whom many will know from their days on CBC's Double Exposure. Homelessness Action Week kicks off on Monday, Oct. 14 - Thanksgiving, and the fundraising dinner and action takes place on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Columbia Theatre. Tickets are $75 each. For tickets, call Lynn Osborn at 604-603-8412 or Dave Brown at 778-288-8887.
