Are you a new writer looking to share your voice? An established author seeking a new audience? Whatever your background as a writer, you're invited to take part in the Royal City Literary Arts Society's new open mike short story nights.

The next event is on Wednesday, Aug.

14 (tonight) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Grill.

The open mike series is hosted by local writer and comic Margo Prentice.

"People bring chapters from their books, or short stories," she explained. "Or storytellers telling their original stories." Each reader gets five minutes, with featured authors having 20 minutes to make their presentations. Prentice was pleasantly surprised by the turnout of talent at the first open mike session, when 18 people arrived to share their work - from relative beginners to established authors.

"My goodness, we have a lot of talent here," Prentice said, noting she was surprised by the number of established authors wanting to share their work.

Not only that, she notes, but writers have been coming from all over - White Rock, North Vancouver, even visitors from the U.S. who read about it in the paper.

"I never know who's going to show up," she said.

And that's just how she likes it. Anyone interested in participating, or just in listening to other writers, is invited to attend the next open mike event on Wednesday. Events will also follow on Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. The Heritage Grill is at 447 Columbia St. For further information about the series, check out www.rclas.com.
