A ska punk music fest and a vintage fashion show are just two of the fun things to do in New West this weekend.

Live entertainment, family fun, and community fundraisers are also happening around town. Here are the Record's top picks for the Feb. 21 to 23 weekend:

Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22

New West Ska Punk Fest Two

Check out live music at New West Ska Punk Fest Two, featuring a performances by: Class Action (part of Calgary’s ska scene since 2006); Kownterpoint (a fusion of reggae, punk rock, ska, and alternative sounds); Brehdren (a mix of ska, reggae and rock); Brasser (a queer-fronted ska punk band from Vancouver); Space Chimp (a reggae-rock group from Vancouver); and Dead Fast (a punk rock band). Ska Punk Fest Two is presented by Pacific Sound System and Bully’s Studios.

Saturday, Feb. 22

Bevvies and Bites 2025

Enjoy an evening of delicious bites and refreshing beverages from various beer and beverage vendors at the Rotary Club of New Westminster’s fifth annual Bevies and Bites community fundraiser. This event, which is raising funds to support the Don't Go Hungry food program and Rotary programs, includes a 50/50 draw and silent auction. It’s also a chance for folks (aged 19 and older) to mingle with fellow community members.

  • Details: Tickets are $43.93 and are available online. Tickets include beverage and bites tasting and a souvenir tasting glass.

Jazz Cats Social

Put on your dancing shoes and hit the dance floor at the Jazz Cats Social, featuring live music by MacRae’s Merry Melody Makers — or just sit back and enjoy the show. The Jazz Cats Social includes a jazz jam (musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and sit in with the band for a song or two), DJ music during the band’s breaks, and a dance lesson. Tickets include light refreshments and beginner swing dance lesson (partner not required).

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 22, 6 p.m. The evening includes: 6 p.m. – an all-levels soft shoe tap workshop; 6:45 p.m. – a beginner swing dance lesson; 7:30 p.m. – live music and social dancing; and 8:15 p.m. (time approximate; during the band’s first break) – a Black History Chat with Damian.

Ring of Fire

Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy the music of Johnny Cash, when the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Ring of Fire. This show, originally produced on Broadway, brings Cash’s story to life through a talented collection of singers and musicians. I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Country Boy, and A Boy Named Sue are among the songs attendees will hear.

Super Weekend

Explore how the unique geography of the Fraser Canyon shapes the weather patterns of the Lower Mainland through engaging science demonstrations, storytime and hands-on crafts. It’s all part of Blustery Fraser Canyon, this month’s Super Weekend programming at Fraser River Discovery Centre.

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (On Saturday, storytime and windsock crafts take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and science demonstrations run from 1 to 4 p.m.; on Sunday, science demonstrations are offered from 10 am. to 12:30 p.m. and windy watercolour art will be done from 1 to 4 p.m.)
  • Where: Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr.

Time capsule viewing

Check out the contents of the World’s Tallest Tin Soldier’s time capsule and see what items community members and organizations contributed back in 2001. Because many community members did not have a chance to view the times when the time capsule was opened on Feb. 14, the city is putting them on display this weekend.

Sunday, Feb. 23

Heritage New West AGM/Fashion Show

Attend the Heritage New West annual general meeting, which features a brief bit of AGM business, followed by a live vintage fashion show presented by popular fashion historian Ivan Sayers. Models will wear authentic period garments — from wartime overalls to a postwar Dior-inspired gown in Sayers’ presentation: From Rationing to Ravishing: The transformation of women’s clothing from WW2 to the Postwar Era.

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 22, 2 to 4 p.m. The meeting begins at 2 p.m., with the fashion show to follow.
  • Where: The Sanctuary on Sixth, which is located on the corner of Queens Avenue and Sixth Street
  • Details: Doors open at 1:30 p.m., and attendees will have time to view the society’s heritage art collection and buy or renew a membership to Heritage New West.

Dine and Donate Local- A Community Dinner for a Cause

Support the New West Hospice Society and a local restaurant at the launch of the Dine and Donate series, a series of fundraisers being organized by Coun. Ruby Campbell in support of local restaurants and causes.

Tech Drop-in with Teens Teach Technology

Get help with your tech questions from local teens at the Tech Drop-in, which is facilitated by volunteers from Teens Teach Technology, in collaboration with the New Westminster Public Library.
