Roller derby, recycling, and Easter fun — those are among the events happening in New West this weekend.

The Record has rounded up some of the activities worth checking out. Here are our top picks for the April 11 to 13 weekend.

Friday, April 11

Secret Balboa Club

Join the Secret Balboa Club for an evening of dancing and socializing with balboa enthusiasts. (Balboa is a swing dance.)

  • When: Friday, April 11, 7:45 to 9:45 p.m. (A group warmup is from 7:45 to 8 p.m. and the social dance is from 9 to 9:45 p.m.
  • Where: təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, 65 East Sixth Ave. (Fitness room 2C on the second floor)

Walk with the Mayor for WALK30

Help New Westminster win the WALK30 Challenge by joining Mayor Patrick Johnstone on a WALK30 walk. On this 30-minute/two-kilometre walk in the West End and Connaught Heights neighbourhood, you can chat about the future vision for the area around the 22nd Street SkyTrain station. Today’s walk has some grades.

NWPD electronic recycling event

Dispose of all of your unwanted electronics with the confidence of knowing your personal data won’t be inappropriately used. The New Westminster Police Department is teaming up with the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) to offer free electronics recycling; ERA will data clean all donated items.

  • When: Saturday, April 12, noon to 4 p.m.
  • Where: New Westminster City Hall, 511 Royal Ave.
  • Details: Free. Community members can drop off items via a drive-thru or park and unload your items with the help of our volunteers.

Children's Swap Meet

Get deals on children’s and baby items at today’s Children’s Swap Meet. You’ll find items including toys, clothing, and equipment at today’s event.

Easter Market

Enjoy a celebration of authentic Ukrainian cuisine, culture, and crafts at today’s Ukrainian Easter Market.

Ndidi O

Listen to great music when award-winning singer-songwriter Ndidi Onukwulu (Ndidi O) brings her soul, blues, contemporary roots, folk, and Americana music to town. She’s a two-time Juno Award nominee and the 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards winner for Blues Artist of the Year.

Poetry + Art Salon

Celebrate National Poetry Month at Poetry + Art Salon, a drop-in event hosted by New Westminster poet laureate Janet Kvammen and the Royal City Literary Arts Society. The day’s guests include guests Alan Hill (poet laureate emeritus), Angela Kenyon, and Jessica Lee McMillan.

Sunday, April 13

Art workshop

Attend a free art workshop with Latin American Women's Art Collective "Hijas del Sol" members Priscila Holtz, Natalia Botero, Damarys Sepulveda and Mónica Moscoso. At this Arts New West event, they’ll help attendees create a monotype collagraph/relief print.

  • Details:  No registration is required but space is limited. 

Open skate

Join the Terminal City Roller Derby group at an open skate, where you can hear about its learn-to-skate program, meet coaches and league members, hang out on skates, and more.
