B.C. funds nearly $248K for New West arts, culture programs

Eight New West-based organizations are set to help create a more vibrant community through the latest round of gaming grants.

Eight New Westminster organizations that specialize in arts, culture and community programming are getting a financial boost from the B.C. government.

A total of $247,700 is flowing in from Victoria from the latest round of Community Gaming Grants as part of an $18.2-million investment for more than 650 nonprofit groups across the province.

The New West-based recipients are as follows (in descending numerical order):

  • $75,700 = Massey Theatre Society Community
  • $49,500 = Recovery Day Vancouver Society
  • $35,000 = Arts Council of New Westminster
  • $34,000 = Royal City Musical Theatre Society 
  • $23,000 = VAYA Youth Arts Society
  • $14,500 = New Westminster Symphony Society
  • $11,000 = Savage Production Society
  • $5,000 = Zornitza Arts and Culture Society

"The BC Association for Charitable Gaming applauds the tenacity of arts-and-culture organizations across the province as they produce transformational events in their communities," said Christine Hawkins, chair of the BC Association for Charitable Gaming, in a news release on Friday, Dec. 15. The money is set to help the local organizations expand their outreach.

"Gaming funding is a critical component of the arts organizations' annual production cycle and we are grateful for this support to the communities served."

The funding is part of $140 million provided annually through Community Gaming Grants to not-for-profit organizations throughout B.C., the province added.

Since 2017, the money has helped more than 5,100 arts-and-culture sector not-for-profit organizations.
