It was a great day for New Westminster on Tuesday as the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame announced the addition of Lyle Robinson into the Player Category and the 1980-89 Salmonbellies in the Team Category.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled with these additions,” said Bellies President, Paul Horn. “Those 80’s teams were true powerhouses, and one of the keys to their success was Lyle. Seeing him enter the hall at the same time as his teammates is something special.”
Derek Malawsky, who played with the Bellies from 95-97, will also be inducted, joining his brother Curt (inducted in 2015).
The CLHoF will also induct players Eric Perroni and Bob Watson, veteran Chuck Li, builders Pierre Filion and Steve Govett in their class of 2021.
The Hall will host its induction ceremony in November, officially adding both the 2021 and the 2020 inductees at that time.
In the ten-year period of 1980 -1989 the Salmonbellies competed in 7 Mann Cup Championships, winning the Canadian Championship 3 times (1981, 1986, 1989). Above all else, the Salmonbellies had an outstanding cohort of players, the core of which were with the team during much of this 10 year stretch. In fact, 11 of the players who are in the 1980 team picture are in the 1989 team picture and 18 members of these teams have been Inducted as Honoured Members of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
