Byelection briefs: Questionnaires, an all-candidates meeting, and voting in New West

What are the most pressing education issues in New Westminster? What has inspired four New West residents to put their names forward in the Feb. 3 school board byelection?

The Record has forwarded questionnaires to the four candidates who are hoping to be the next elected trustee in New Westminster.

Later this week, the Record will begin posting their responses to various questions. Be sure to check our website so you can learn a little more about the candidates and their views on various issues.

The four candidates are running in the Feb. 3 school board byelection (in alphabetical order): Jalen Bachra (Community First New Westminster); Kathleen Carlsen (New West Progressives); Alejandro Diaz; and Shawn Sorensen.

Save the date

The New Westminster District Parent Advisory Council is gearing up for its Jan. 22 all-candidates meeting.

The four candidates who are running to fill the vacant seat on the school board have been invited to attend DPAC’s Jan. 22 all-candidates meeting – and you’re invited to attend to hear what they have to say about all the issues. They’ll be responding to questions submitted by parents, caregivers, PACs and students.

The all-candidates meeting is on Monday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. at New Westminster Secondary School, 820 Sixth St. DPAC is a non-partisan organization and doesn’t endorse or support any particular candidate or party.

As of Jan. 15, the election information page on the City of New Westminster’s website had no other all-candidates meetings listed.

Countdown to election day

In less than three weeks, New West voters will head to the polls to fill a vacant seat on the New Westminster School Board.

The 2024 school board byelection is on Saturday, Feb. 3, but advance voting starts next week. Two advance votinig days have been scheduled: Wednesday, Jan. 24 at the Queensborough Community Centre; and Wednesday, Jan. 31 in council chambers at New Westminster City Hall.

On election day, here’s where you’ll be able to vote between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

  • Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School gym – 1714 Eighth Ave.
  • Fraser River Middle School gym – 800 Queens Ave.
  • Glenbrook Middle School gym – 701 Park Cres.
  • Skwo:wech Elementary School gym – 331 Richmond St.
