Groove Cat Books & Records is inviting New Westies in to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday — and you can lend a hand to animals in need while you’re at it.

The uptown shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, and folks can enjoy treats and free colouring books for kids (while supplies last). There will be in-store prize draws for gift cards and trade credit, and Jesse-Lee Schulte will offer up live music between 3:30 and 4:45 p.m.

While you’re there, you can also help the store in its quest to support animals in need.

They’re collecting donations for New Westminster Animal Services, with an incentive for customers. For every dollar up to $10 that you donate through Groove Cat, the shop will match that dollar amount in trade credit that you can use towards used book purchases.

Donations to the animal shelter through Groove Cat must be made in person at the store; while you’re there, you can use cash, debit or credit.

The donation drive is being conducted in honour of Groove Cat’s shop cat, Luna, whom they found at the Vancouver SPCA after someone abandoned her by leaving her in a box under a car.

“When we went to meet Luna, she immediately took to us. She snuggled right up to John and was purring in his arms. We knew at that moment she was the one. We feel so blessed that she chose us,” shop owners Cat and John Hughes wrote on their website.

“The most amazing thing about her is that she is very friendly, gentle and sweet. She does not bite or scratch, and she loves to greet our customers as they come into the shop, making her the perfect shop kitty.”

Now, Luna is a senior cat, being 13 years old, so she’s not always up for being in the shop. But when she is there? Well, if you sit on the sofa, she may just jump into your lap and demand you pet her.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.
