Parts of Stewardson Way are closed to traffic as part of a police investigation.

A motor vehicle incident involving a commercial vehicle has prompted a full closure of a portion of Stewardson Way.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, the New Westminster Police Department posted a notice on social media that motorists should expect significant delays on Stewardson Way near 12th St. due to an eastbound motor vehicle incident involving a commercial vehicle.

“Partial and full road closures in effect until it’s unloaded and cleared,” said the notice. “No ETA for full road opening”

At 2:15 p.m., the New Westminster Police Department posted an update stating that Stewardson Way would soon be subject to a complete road closure between Third Avenue and 12th Street.

“All vehicles are advised to avoid the downtown area of New Westminster,” said the notice. “There is no alternate route for trucks through New West.”

Comments posted to social media suggest the incident involved a flatbed truck carrying large steel beams, which had slid forward, crushing the back of the truck cab.

More to come.
