If you plan to buy doughnuts to get through the mid-week slump, do it at a doughnut sale that supports a good cause.
New West’s Purpose Secondary School is back with its fourth Krispy Kreme fundraiser on Wednesday, May 10. Organized twice a year — one in the fall/winter and another in the spring — the fundraiser benefits the tuition- and fee-free school's educational efforts.
Previously, the event has raised between $600 and $800, as per Rick Gill, Leadership 11/12 teacher at the school.
This year, funds from the doughnut sale will be used towards breakfast and lunch programs, bus passes for our low- and no-income students, as well as field trips. Previous trips have included visits to a fish hatchery in Abbotsford, the Museum of Vancouver and afternoons at the movies, said Trevor Bodnar, a student in the Leadership 11/12 class, in an email.
Purpose Secondary School is currently able to enroll 90 students in the school from Grades 8 to 12 “who for a variety of reasons find it hard to have their learning, social emotional or mental health needs met in a traditional school setting,” stated a press release.
The independent high school, located in the former Army & Navy Department Store on Columbia Street, is part of Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families, a community service organization.
“Since the school is fee-free and tuition-free, fundraising is really the best way to support the school,” said Bodnar.
“When we do these trips, a lot of the students get excited because they or their families otherwise wouldn't have the funds to do these activities. So, it's really important to keep these activities going,” he added.
The doughnut sale will be between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, outside the Columbia Sandwich Company, 550 Columbia St. One box of doughnuts (a dozen) will be $15 and two boxes will be $27. Cash or credit/debit card payments will be accepted.
