A section of Royal Avenue will be closed for about 12 hours as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

Royal Avenue will be closed between McBride Boulevard and First Street from 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 until approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. This closure is required so Fraser Crossing Partners can complete additional drainage work related to the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

“Nearby residents may hear some noise associated with overnight work activities,” said a notice from the project team. “Drivers may experience temporary delays resulting from the detours. We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.”

According to the notice, pedestrian and cyclist access along Royal Avenue will be maintained while the work is underway.

“Traffic control personnel will be on site to direct traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists,” said the notice. “All traffic pattern changes will be well-signed.”

The project team has outlined the traffic pattern changes that motorists can expect while this work is underway:

  • Westbound vehicles on East Royal Avenue: The westbound through lane will be closed. All turns to McBride Boulevard will be maintained.
  • Eastbound vehicles on Royal Avenue: Drivers will be detoured to Columbia Street via Sixth Street.
  • Southbound vehicles on Bridge Connector using the Royal Avenue off-ramp: Access to Royal Avenue eastbound will be permitted. The right-turn to Royal Avenue westbound will be restricted.
  • Northbound vehicles on Bridge Connector using the McBride Boulevard off-ramp: Access to McBride Boulevard will be maintained. Access to Royal Avenue westbound will be restricted.
  • Access to the Pattullo Bridge: Drivers will be detoured to southbound Bridge Connector via Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue as the Royal Avenue on-ramp will be closed. Alternatively, drivers can use the Columbia Street on-ramp to access the bridge.
  • Right/left-in, right-out access will be in effect at Leopold Place for local residents. Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist when required.

The new bridge, scheduled to open in 2024, is being built just upstream of the existing Pattullo Bridge.
