A downtown restaurant suffered fire and water damage in an early morning fire.
About 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, New Westminster Fire and Rescue crews responded to a report of a structure fire at 800 Carnarvon St. Fire crews were seen at locations around the Shops at New West, including the McInnes overpass, Columbia Street and Carnarvon Street.
“On arrival, it was difficult to determine the exact location of the fire, but there were large amounts of smoke observed in the open area and the sprinkler system had been activated,” said acting fire Chief Erin Williams. “Crews determined the smoke to be coming from a restaurant, and once they gained entry, the fire was extinguished quickly.”
Williams said the Donair Dude restaurant sustained fire damage, as well as damage from the sprinkler activation.
