Flooding on the Fraser River – why does it happen and what are the impacts?
Those are some of the questions being explored at this weekend’s Super Saturdays event at Fraser River Discovery Centre.
“Flooding has always been a part of life along the Fraser River, but climate change is causing these floods to be more unpredictable and more dangerous,” said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of external relations and development. “There are things that all of us can do, though, which is why we wanted to talk about it as part of this month’s Super Saturdays.”
Super Saturdays is a regular series of public programs at Fraser River Discovery Centre that celebrate the living, working Fraser River.
At the July 23 Super Saturdays, FRDC staff will be on hand to help guests discover how to predict and prepare for extreme weather events. Activities will include: modelling how a river shapes the land using a stream table; exploring traditional and industrial methods of flood risk management; and designing flood-smart infrastructure.
“While everyone is welcome, these activities are aimed at families with children six years and older and will require full parental involvement,” Bruyneel said. “And it will also be safe, as all activities are consistent with our updated COVID health and safety plan, including the need to pre-register at https://fraserriverdiscovery.org/super-saturdays/.”
Super Saturdays take place on the last Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each month’s family-friendly event focuses on a different Fraser River topic.
Pre-registration for Super Saturdays includes paid admission to the Discovery Centre, so visitors can explore the galleries after the Super Saturdays activity.
Fraser River Discovery Centre, located at 788 Quayside Dr., provides a variety of exhibits and programs related to the Fraser River.
