November was Financial Literacy Month.

The annual awareness campaign has come and gone, but one New Westminster organization is looking to the new year to help local residents develop a better understanding of how to budget, invest and set money goals for 2024.

The Lower Mainland Purpose Society is hosting a series of free in-person workshops every Monday in January.

Participants are set to learn a variety of topics from a licensed Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) that aim to provide clarity on managing finances.

This includes obtaining a knowledge of payday loans, taxable incomes and, for parents and guardians, the characteristics of being a money-smart role model for kids.

The Purpose Society's workshop schedule is as follows:

  • Jan. 4 — Managing your money
    • Budgeting, financial services, investing and financial goals
  • Jan. 11 — Journey out of debt
    • How credit works, benefits and risks, payday loans and dealing with debt
  • Jan. 18 — Are you a good financial role model?
  • Jan. 25 — Effective tax strategies
    • Understanding tax law, record keeping, reducing taxable income and increasing deductions

All one-hour workshops will start at 5:30 p.m. and will take place at the Purpose Society's building (40 Begbie St.).

Refreshments will be provided for interested residents, the organization said.
