Celebrate National Canadian Film Day with free screenings of Canadian movies.

On the 10th year celebrations of National Canadian Film Day (CanFilmDay), a coast-to-coast ode to Canadian cinema, New West Film Society will be hosting a free screening of Canadian film Peace By Chocolate by filmmaker Jonathan Keijser at the New West Landmark cinemas.

On April 19, over 1,300 live events are set to take place across the country and approximately 120 events in nearly 45 countries around the world — including the New West screening of the inspired-by-a-true-story Canadian movie.

Folks can head to the Landmark Cinemas on Carnarvon street at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, for a free screening of Peace By Chocolate, which is about a refugee family settling in Nova Scotia.

The film focuses on a young Syrian refugee who struggles to settle into his new Canadian small-town life, caught between following his dream to become a doctor and preserving his family's chocolate-making legacy after his father’s chocolate factory was bombed.

“It's a lovely, warmhearted movie that is a very Canadian story,” said Cathy Sostad, president of the New West Film Society. “I think the experience of being a new Canadian is something a lot of Canadians relate to, and know. It's a 'sweet' movie on so many levels.”

She added that CanFilmDay is an important day to recognize the talent and diversity present in Canadian filmmaking. “It is wonderful to focus on Canadian films… and is a great opportunity for local filmmakers to have their films seen,” she said.

CanFilmDay was launched in 2014 by Reel Canada to celebrate the achievements of Canadian filmmakers.

According to their website, the organizers have created “an All You Can Watch Buffet of 100 enticing films” by Canadians filmmakers for people from all around the world to “feel connected to our cultures and shared values.” It includes critically acclaimed award winners,  movies that make you smile, a selection of worldview-changing films and new releases.

Although it is all free, if you were hoping to make a visit to your local screening of Peace By Chocolate, it is advised to secure a spot through the Eventbrite link
