If you've been watching the headlines about Lytton and wondering how to help, here's your chance.
Residents of the village were forced to flee on Wednesday after a rapidly moving wildfire engulfed the town. Much, if not all, of the town has been destroyed, and residents – many of whom fled with no belongings – are now staying in a variety of evacuation centres and hotels in nearby communities.
Here in New Westminster, the Savage Society is leading an effort to help the people of Lytton/Tl'kemtsin.
The society has teamed up with the 2 Rivers Remix Society to host a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $200,000. (As of Friday at 8 a.m., it's sitting at more than $142,000.)
Volunteers will also be on site at Massey Theatre today (Friday, July 2) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collection fire relief donations.
Among the most-needed items are socks and towels; children's activities such as books, arts and crafts, and colouring books; fresh fruit and vegetables that are easy to eat without preparation; and personal care items such as brushes, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel.
Pillows, fans and kids' pools are also welcomed.
Other suggested items include:
- pullups
- wipes
- formula
- baby bottles
- baby food
- crackers/chips
- canned food
- bottled water
- Gatorade or Powerade drinks
- blankets
- toothpaste
- toothbrushes
- pads and tampons
- dog food
- cat food
- underwear and socks
- items for pets and livestock: crates, cages, water bowls, leashes, baggies, pet foods, beds, medical supplies
