If you’re looking for some motivation to get moving, you’re in luck.

Walk30, a friendly competition between residents in New West, is returning from April 10 to May 14. The challenge is designed to encourage and inspire people to walk more to improve overall health and wellness, to strengthen community connections, and to rethink how people get around.

The goal is for participants to walk every day for five weeks and track their progress to see which municipality can walk the most total minutes. They’ll also have a chance to winsome awesome prizes from local businesses.

New West has won the Golden Shoephy trophy in 2018, 2019 and 2022. The competition ended in a tie in 2021 and wasn’t held in 2020 because of COVID-19.

Can New West win the coverted Golden Shoephy once again?

Community members have two ways to participate – as individuals or as groups. Individuals who participate alone will log their minutes on the ChallengeRunner platform. People who are participating with a group of people (in-person or virtually) can either log their time into the ChallengeRunner platform individually or have their team leader log everyone’s time.

Last year, 882 participants logged a total of 1.03 million walking minutes during the challenge.

Save the date: Saturday, May 6

Steel and Oak Brewing Co. is hosting its first-ever running event – a five-kilometre race in Queen’s Park – on Saturday May 6.

Runners will complete two loops of the park in a traffic free route. After crossing the finish line, participants will be able to enjoy a post-race beer garden, get some post-run nourishment at a food truck and enjoy some music to celebrate everyone's achievements.

While early-access registration has begun for the S&O Run Club, it goes live to the public next week.  Stay tuned for more details.
